Shu Uemura: Eye Shadow Numbering System

I'm a Shu girl, great stuff. There are a tons reviews on Shu (checkout makeupalley.com for many) so I'm not going to do much of a review. I want to share some things that your average person doesn't know, not even the average Shu make up artist knows, at least not most of the ones I've talked to.

-----

Many people complain about the use of numbers instead of names. The numbers DO mean something and they make a lot of sense once you realize the system. I'll explain e/s here and blush in another review, the lipsticks and foundations I still don't know.

Eye Shadow

~Each 100 equals a color family, for new and old formulas:
100 = Pink & Rose
200 = Orange
300 = Yellow, Gold & Brick
400 = Yellow-Green, Olive & Green
500 = Green & Turquoise
600 = Blue
700 = Purple
800 = Beige & Brown
900 = Rainbow, White, Gray, Silver, Charcoal & Black

In general the lower the number within it's own 100 group the lighter the color, therefore the higher the number the darker. This is a loose guideline and seems to apply less to the new colors.

Example: P Orange 204 would be a shimmery light orange. M Orange 275 would be a much darker matte orange (again, loose guideline).

Example: ME Purple 720 would be a very shimmery med-light purple. M Purple 795 would be a very dark matte purple.

One of the more confusing "names" is IR Rainbow 900y. Here is what it all means:
- IR = iridescent
- Rainbow implies the "rainbow" shows more then 1 color
- Y = Yellow (there is also an IR Rainbow 900g (green), 900p (pink), & 900v (violet).
What that means is that the undertone for 900y is yellow (or gold) and is to be used to layer over other colors to change the base color.

-----

~The New Eye Shadows

The first installment of the new formula are very nice. They are softer then the "old" formula. Pigment is good, many of the colors show up better then some of the older look-a-likes. But, some of the ME e/s aren't quite as good as the old formula (but the old ones were hit or miss too, for example ME 390, ME 638, ME 945 were just a few that were awesome; but ME 370, ME 388 & ME 780 were only nice, not the awesome-ness of some of the others). These retail for $20.00 US, 2100 Yen in Japan (aprox $18+ US, changes as exchange rate changes)

So far the way the new numbering system works is that each number (150 for example) comes in each of the four standard e/s textures:
ME = Metal, P = Pearl, IR = Iridescent, and M = Matte
So there will be a
ME Pink 150
P Pink 150
IR Pink 150
and M Pink 150

100's are Pinks
200's are Oranges
300's are Yellows & Golds
400's are Light Greens & Greens (some look like olives)
500's are Greens (some look like turquoise)
600's are Blues
700's are Purples
800's are Beiges & Browns
900's are everything else including White, Gray, Silver & Blacks.

~Comparison of ME's, old vs new

So far there are several look-a-likes in the new line compared to the old line. I won't list them all, but a few are:
Old = New
ME Pink 125 = ME Pink 150
ME Gold 390 = ME Gold 350
ME Gold 365 = IR Gold 350
ME Olive 480 = ME Green 450
ME Green 555 = ME Green 550
ME Silver 945 = ME Brown 850

For some reason I can't get the full pic to show, the right side is cut off.
Shu Uemura ME Eye Shadows: Old & New

P.S. Lots of people complain about the packaging, it's very minimal and meant to be. Shu, like many Japanese cosmetics is meant to be "depotted" and placed in a palette. There is a hole on the back of each single "pot", you can find this by looking for a small white circle. Using a paper clip or tooth pick, you can gently push the pan out of the pot. My friend, who turned me onto Shu, used to use pliers to chip away the clear plastic, lol. I've often hear about people using the candle or other heating method to extract the pans, usually with minor damage.

The back will be covered with glue (wipes off easily) which is what Shu wants you to use to use the clue or double sided stickers to place the pans in the open palettes. For some reason, none of the Japanese brands I have have pan material made of something magnetic. You can add magnets to the back but you also have to add them to the palettes. It's very annoying and I hate it. I use double stick tape to keep mine in place.

The Shu open palettes are reasonably priced, but I prefer to use Trish McEvoy Planner Pages to hold mine. It's fun to arrange and rearrange the e/s and blushes.

Chanel Nail Polish List Part 1 (names with numbers)

Chanel nail polish has a large following and deservidly so. The np comes in many wonderful colors and the formula is quite nice as well. Yes, it is expensive at $20 each, but your whole collection doesn't need to be Chanel, a few choice colors may be more then enough... for the average lady. For us wonderful yet crazy MUA'ers, we may need a few more then average. :)

To make your choices, it helps to have information. If you don't even know the names, how can you find them? This is Part 1 (names with numbers) of a list of all the Chanel nail polishes that I am *certain* exist. I have either seen pics of these or the info comes from trusted others, esp from MUA. Some have both the French and English spelling.

I'm sure there are many I don't have listed, if you know of any, please let me know, I'd love to add them.

About Me

Hi, my name is Caroline. I am 32 years old and live in Scottsdale, AZ where I grew up. I have 6 wonderful cats and a large aquarium full of discus fish. I am close to my family and have many online friends, sadly, most of my in-person friends have moved out of state.
---

My life is defined by pain. There is no nice way to say it. I have chronic migraines (4-6 days a week on average), chronic daily headaches (every single solitary day since I was 17, I am now 32), other types of headaches I have are cluster headaches, cluster-migraines and hemicrannia continua (predominately on one side or the other, me = left side; but these are now less then they used to be); all to a lesser degree then the others. I also have Fibromyalgia, Temporomandibular Disorder (aka TMJ), Stage 4 Endometriosis. Plus several other minor problems your average person has. None of these will kill me, but they all lower my quality of life.

A major part of my life has been affected by thyroid problems. I had severe hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid) when I was 18-22 and had my thyroid killed with radioactive iodine. Now I am severely hypothyroid (not enough thyroid), which affects all my other illnesses and so much more. Your thyroid is like is like the clock that manages your metabolism, having hypo is like your body slowing down until you are where I am now, nearly stopped (according to too many blood tests). I have depression, I heal very slowly, my hair is falling out, I am always tired but have a hard time sleeping, my taste buds don't work as well as they used to and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Technically, having hypothyroidism can kill you, but it probably would never happen, modern medicine would catch it and you would take medication for the rest of your life, but you wouldn't die. Basically, if you were on a deserted island, you might eventually go into a coma and die, but it would take awhile.

---

More pleasant things that my life centers around are my cats, reading, watching movies, being online with friends and makeup:

~I have 6 cats, yes 6. All rescue kitties, 4 I raised from a very early age. Calvin, Millie, Lizzy, Favorite, Cheesy & Smudge. Strange names, I know. Favorite, Cheesy and Smudge are 3 of 4 litter mates I rescued but never found homes for, their temporary names became permanent after awhile when they all started to answer to them. Favorite was my favorite of the 4 kittens, he warmed up to me in less then an hour and I probably would have kept him anyway. Cheesy was the one the vet choose to draw blood from (for feline AIDS and Leukemia testing) and it took 3 legs and 11 sticks to draw, so he was like Swiss cheese, hence Cheesy. Smudge, or Smudgy as it has become, is a Siamese mix and when he was young the points hadn't come in yet, just a small smudge of dark on his nose. I love all cats and am partial to Siamese.

~I love to read and to re-read books. Books I love are like old friends coming to visit, I like to read them more then once. I read every day (if my headaches allow it) and find pleasure in turning others on to favorite books and authors. Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice" is by far my favorite book. But I also love things from Shakespeare to Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter.

~My movie watching is down from where it used to be. I went to film school and learned an appreciation for the finer points of movies. I enjoy nearly everything, except maybe silent movies, can't get into that. Love old movies and *good* westerns (John Ford was a god!). But I'm not any fun to watch movies with, I'm too into the technical and have been know to grab the remote and rewind to see a great camera pan again. Unfortunately, my migraines have made watching movies in a theater with others nearly impossible. So now I watch from home and can rewind to my hearts content.

~I am a make up and nail polish addict and proud of it! Some people know me from MUA, makeupalley.com, a wonderful place to visit if you have never been before. MUA has opened up a new and fun world to me, the sharing of a love of makeup. I have learned much in the last several years and hope I can help others with information and pics. You could say that I like make up or you could say I was a collector, both would be true, but both would be severely underestimating it. I have *tons* of make up and nail polish! I love it and collect it. My blog will probably be 95% about make up. And no, too much is never enough...

.

Hello

I've been looking for a place to post all the tons of information I have gathered over the last several years, both related to make up and not. There are several great blogs out there about the newest and latest collections, so I won't do that. I'll just post what makes me happy and maybe you'll like some of it too.

Hopefully this will become a new home.

Ta Ta,
Caroline
